Heart Matters

After waiting through the dreariness of the colder winter months, spring officially arrives later this week.   [SIGH!]  For several days now, splashes of color have become more prevalent as trees start to unfurl their buds into tiny, tender leaves in varying shades of pale greens and deep
reds.  Hyacinths, jonquils, daffodils and crocuses herald springs’ imminent arrival with a show of vibrant yellows, purples, and pinks.  Blossoms make a bold display in unexpected areas as shrubs and bushes join in the celebration of winter’s passing.  Daily the chorus of birds grows louder and more melodious as migrating birds on their way north stop and join with their year-round feathered cousins in the singing.   The world appears almost new again as it dresses itself in spring finery
– looking as if it’s been re-created – and feels to us as if it has been given new life.

While we can rejoice as the seasons change, it isn’t truly an illustration of recreation, but rather the evidence of the cyclical nature of created things as they continue to function in the way they
were designed to do.  Human beings – indeed all living things - do exactly the same thing as they follow the behavior patterns that are natural to each species.

At the start of our world, just after mankind was created, God looked at all that He had created – the earth, the heavens, the trees, grasses and plants, as well as man – and said that it was
very good.  (See Genesis 1:31)    This ‘very good’ status remained until Adam and Eve listened to Satan’s lies and allowed sin to enter the world.  (See Genesis 3).  From that very moment, all of creation was corrupted, so much so that God’s heart was grieved over our (i.e. man’s)creation.

Genesis 6:5-6
“The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.  The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.”

In the whole wide world, God found only eight people – all belonging to Noah’s family – who had found favor in God’s eyes and thus were worthy of saving.   This family, along with the two-by-two animals who came to Noah to be put into the ark, was the only remnants of life that were spared.   The remainder of human, animal and plant life on this planet was wiped out in the biggest flood this world has ever experienced.   Mankind was given a new beginning; yet even with the human race being ‘rebooted’ (so to speak), it was not a re-creation as we were not made new and were still left to contend with the sin nature that we had inherited from Adam and Eve when they accepted it from Satan in the Garden of Eden.

While it is true that humans are born into this sinful state and that we will act out of those - what has become natural - behavior patterns, there is still a small part of us, in the deepest depths of
our heart, that desires reconciliation and fellowship with our Creator once again. Mankind longs for a life filled with hope and the promise of a brighter future.  Indeed, isn’t that what we have all wanted at one point or other in life – a true second chance?

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
“Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

The incredible, mind-boggling wonderfulness of this re-creation process once you accept Christ is that it happens instantaneously.

1 Samuel 16:7b
“The Lord does not look at the things people look at.  People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

I remember the time when I had made a heart-decision to be committed to living a life in Christ.
It was challenging – and still is for some - for those who ‘knew me when’  to accept that I was a not the old me anymore.  They could not move beyond what they used to know about me into the truth that was being lived out in front of them every day.  Yet the more I continued to  live a life pleasing to God in my status as His child, then even the naysayers were able to see that
something had indeed happened to change me from who I was into someone new.  It truly is a heart matter.  And once the heart makes the choice to change, the rest of the body will follow.

Ezekiel 36:26-27 "I [God] will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.  I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them."

A second chance – a re-created life filled with the Hope of all creation – is as close as a heart-felt prayer to our Creator.  The choice is yours.  He’s waiting for you.

Immeasurable Bigness

Picture
There is something humbling about being on the shore of a large body of water.  This huge, blue vastness in front of me helps to put into perspective how small human beings are – how small I am.

The watery vertical line on the horizon is deceptive in its appearance as it looks to be the very edge of the world.   If we weren’t enlightened as to the spherical shape of our planet, we
would think that we were in danger of falling off of the world should we succeed in traveling to that sharp border in the distance.

Across this great expanse of sea are other lands and myriads of other peoples living
out their lives.  One realizes that it is only by God’s design that we were born in a particular location and under specific circumstances.  None of this was by chance, but rather by the guiding hand of Providence.

The immensity of this water body speaks to me in small part of the large expressive
nature of God as Creator as He made all of the expanses and then filled them with considerable celestial or physical bodies (Genesis 1); at the same time, I am equally mindful of the intimate knowledge He has of the minutest parts of us as He is able to
number the very hairs of our head (Matthew 10:30).

While unable to see the deep chasms reported to be far below the surface, I know that if I found myself there that it would still not be too far away for God’s love to reach me.

Romans 8:38-39
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The sunlight, dazzling on the water’s surface, pales against the radiance of the
glory that shines out from Him and illuminates a whole city.

Revelation 21:23
“The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.”

The water birds dip and soar on the constant wind; their playfulness expresses the
unspoken confidence they have in their Creator that they will be provided with all that they for survival this day.

Matthew 6:26
“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds  them.  Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Other birds perch on the bobbing buoys and face the sun as they serenely drink in
its warmth.  Quietly they remain until the wind urges them to take flight and play once
more.

Looking closer to shore, one can’t help but acknowledge that it is only God Himself who could set the invisible boundaries in place so that the waves know where to stop their advance.

Job 38:1, 8-11
“Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm.  He said:  ... “Who shut up the seas behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness, when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, ’This far you may come and no farther; here is where
your proud waves halt’?”

Children and adults alike seek treasures along the shore as they poke and prod about in the sand, hopeful to find a pretty shell, a colorful pebble, or other shiny
object that they find beautiful.

Others walk beside the water’s edge with a friend and quietly talk of common interests or issues, or share easy laughter together over an amusing tale.

Some sit still and silently gaze out across the water as they contemplate private thoughts of both lost dreams and future hopes.

And, always, the children run and squeal with laughter oblivious of all else but the
enjoyment of the moment and the adventure of simply playing at the seaside.

How like all of these we need to be.  In awe of the Creator and what He has made for us to enjoy; resting in His immeasurable love for us while living fully confident in His care; quietly communing with Him or joyously celebrating Him with the simplicity and abandon of a child; constantly seeking the many treasures He longs to share with us; and enjoying the warmth and life He has given us through His Son.

You are not here by chance; you were not a mistake.  The Creator longs to show you how vast His immeasurable love is for you.

Isaiah 33:6 "He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge;  the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure."

He’s waiting for you.

Thanksgiving

This week, many across our beloved country will be busily preparing a Thanksgiving feast for their family and/or friends this Thursday. It’s an exciting time of traditional recipes, or for the more daring, new recipes that we hope will turn out picture-perfect and become a new favorite.  In addition to all of the food we will overindulge in, there are football  games to enjoy – “Please, God, if you’ll just let my team win, I’ll thank you from the bottom of my heart!” – as we head into ‘Black Friday,’ the day that usually begins in the wee hours of the morning for many die-hard shoppers so that not one door buster sale is missed.

Yet Thanksgiving is so much more than overeating, watching too many football games or spending more money than we can repay before Christmas the following year.  In our state of bountifulness, it is easy to think that everyone else is also experiencing the same level of plenty.  The truth is that many of the holidays on our calendar can be painful to people who are alone, feel forgotten, or who do not have the opportunity to feast and spend as others do.  For all of us, regardless of where we fall on the ‘plenti-meter,’ Thanksgiving is an attitude that begins in the heart.

Psalm 9:1
“I will give thanks to you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your
wonderful deeds.”

What wonderful deeds has the Lord done for you?  Or do you have a difficult time recognizing any of them because you haven’t received what you think you should have by this stage in your life?   If you are having a hard time seeing them, then start simply and thank God for Who He is.

Thank Him because He gave us life.

Revelations 4:11
“You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their
being.”

Thank Him for His love and faithfulness.

Psalm 115:1
“Not to us, O Lord, not to us but to your name be the glory, because of your love and faithfulness.”

Thank Him for the wisdom …

James 1:5
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

… and for the strength He offers to us.

Psalm 18:32
“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.”

Thank Him for His constancy.

Deuteronomy 31:8
“The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

And, best of all, thank Him for the gift of eternal life through His Son.

Romans 6:23
“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Start a new tradition this Thanksgiving and take time to thank God for all of the good He has given to us, for
“apart from you [God], I have no good thing.” (Psalm 16:2) You will discover that the more you give thanks to Him, the more you will find to thank Him for.  He’s waiting for you.

Crisis Point

11/13/2012

Crisis.   According to one online definition, a crisis is “a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger.”  If you are human – and I highly suspect that you are – and are at least in the teenage years or older, you have had a   minimum of one, if not several, already in your life.  Over the course of your lifetime you will likely experience several more.

Yet hope is not lost.  God, in His wisdom and great love for us, knew that this would be so as far back as the Garden of Eden when mankind had their first and greatest crisis.

At the time of creation, God made a lovely environment – a garden spot – and put the man He had formed in it.

Genesis 2:15 (Amp.)
“And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and guard and keep it.”

God also created a wife for Adam and together they lived in and took care of the garden and all of the things in it that God had created for them there.   Life was going well until Genesis chapter 3 when Satan spoke through a serpent  that also lived in the garden.  He (Satan) deceived Eve by implying that God was unfair because He was withholding something from them when He forbade them to eat the fruit of two trees in the garden.  These trees were the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.  Eve believed Satan, ate of the fruit and then shared it with her husband.

Genesis 3:8 (NIV)
“Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of
the garden.  But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?””

Adam and Eve heard the sound of the Lord as He was walking.  The implication is that God walked so frequently in the garden that the sound of His tread was recognizable to them.  This day though, instead of joining Him to talk over the days’ activities or simply walk with Him while He saw what work they had performed that day, they hid from Him because they were ashamed.

When they had eaten the fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, several things happened at once:   They recognized that they were naked (i.e. exposed);  in their  disobedience to God, the first act of sin was committed which caused a chasm in  their relationship with Him; the ruling of the Earth was immediately transferred from Man's authority into Satan’s hands; God cursed the serpent (i.e. Satan) and He cursed the ground; there would now be greatly increased childbearing pains for the woman; and man would have to eat by the sweat of his brow.  As if that were not enough, God, in His great compassion for them, had to exhibit tough love and banish them from the garden He had created for them so
that they would not also eat the fruit of the Tree of Life, which would cause them to forever live in their now-fallen state of separation from Him.

Talk about a crisis!  The knowledge Adam and Eve had gained through their acceptance of Satan’s deception cost them their home, their dominion over the earth, and eternity with their Creator.

All was not lost, however, as before God banished them, He clothed them in animal skins so they would not be exposed, and  He also gave them hope that, while this crisis would now be passed down to every member of humanity from this point forward, He had a plan.

Genesis 3:15 (Amp.)
“And I [God] will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her Offspring; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will
lie in wait and bruise His heel.”

God gave them assurance that a plan was already put into motion that would not only rescue them, but also us from this crisis state.  This plan would come about through the Offspring of woman spoken of in the verse above and was in the form of Jesus Christ, God’s only Son. Because of Him [Christ], we no longer have to be separated from God through our inherited state of sin.  He is still our only Hope today to have a right relationship with our  Creator.

Romans 7:27
“Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day,
first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people.  He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.”  (emphasis mine)

Do you find yourself facing a crisis today?  You do not have to face it alone.  Just as God called “Where are you?” to Adam and Eve, He’s calling also to you today.  He’s waiting for you to answer.

ROCKY REMINDERS

8/30/2012

Picture
Gardeners everywhere have a special kind of faith.  They believe that spring will come, that the seeds they plant will sprout, and that, in due season, they will reap a harvest.  Before any seeds can be planted, however, the ground has to be prepared.

The first time a piece of ground is to be used for raising vegetables, herbs, or flowers it has to be made ready.  The unbroken ground has to be tilled, and regardless of the size of the plot of ground being used or the method utilized to till it, there are undesirable items unearthed during this soil-busting process that have to be removed by hand.  This can be a long, tedious and frustrating operation.

Early in the spring on a particularly hot day, I was using small garden hand tools to remove the sod that I had busted up a few days before.  With nearly each thrust of the three-tined cultivator, I would hear the sound of metal striking stone.  Lifting the tine-pierced sod piece, I shook it vigorously to dislodge as much soil as possible and then stared at the ground as a stone landed with a flat thunksound.  I casually tossed both to the edge of the garden plot, resumed humming a tune to myself and moved onto the next section of sod that needed to be removed.

The more stones that were uncovered, the more my patience waned and my irritation rose.   As if to add insult to injury, on top of the sheer number of the stones, many of them needed to be dug out of the ground before they could be removed.  The casual tossing aside of each new stone turned into forceful throwing as my small mound of rocks grew to the size of a small hillock and my frustration over this project slowly crept towards anger.

Sitting back on my heels, I wondered how something so full of the promise of joy could be so difficult to bring about.
Would all of this effort even be worth it?

I wiped the sweat out of my eyes and stared at the mountain of toss-aside sod and then at the ever-growing pile of rocks next to
it.  Only one-third of the garden plot had been cleared.  Looking at the remaining two-thirds, I felt the tears threatening to well, then glared at that pile of rocks as I asked God loudly, “Why did you have to make so many!?”

Luke 19:40 “I tell you,” he [Jesus] replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

Why would stones cry out?  And who are the ‘they’ this verse speaks of?

Luke 19:37-39 “When he [Jesus] came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:  “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”  Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!””

There will always be those who will try to make us be silent when we offer praise to God.  But our Lord deserves all of our praise, not just for all of the wonderful things He has – and is – doing, but simply for Who He is. He is our Creator, the King of Kings,
the Lord of Lords, our Champion, and our faithful God who is without compare.

I smiled at that pile of stones.  They had ceased to be an irritation and had instead turned into a lovely reminder that it was my privilege as a living being to praise my Creator.  One day, all of the earth – including these stones – would cry out in praise to Him, but today, they would have to remain silent as I lifted my voice in prayerful praise to honor Him and to thank Him for being evident even in these stones.

Are there any ‘rocks’ in your life?  Let them serve as a reminder that we have a Heavenly Father who longs to hear our prayers and receive our praise.
