Dear Diary ...

Not long ago, while searching through one of my bulging bookshelves, I came across several journals that I had written over the span of three or four years.  Unable to find the book I had originally been seeking, I opted instead to curl up into a cozy chair and have a little visit with my past self while I read about life during that time.

It was good to take this leisurely walk down Memory Lane.  Each page contained private thoughts (concerns, confessions, hopes and dreams) as well as an accounting of the people I met, conversations I had, places I visited, how the workday unfolded, the daily chores I either had to do or else had performed, and the projects I hoped to accomplish in the house or yard.

Frequently interspersed between these subjects were the many prayers to God for help or
healing for others or me.  When an unbearable, impossible or unnavigable situation had risen to its’ apex and was about to crush me, the next page would reveal the details of how God
unhurriedly, gently and faithfully provided an answer at just the right time.  Recorded immediately following the resolution of a situation was the prayers of thankfulness for the many ways – oftentimes unexpected - in which God had supplied the answers that I had diligently sought.

Within these pages I discovered in amazement how God brought into reality the dreams that I had carried in my heart and prayed over for as long as I could remember.  There were several times – more than I care to admit - when I had nearly given up.   I poured my heart out to God and would constantly have to remind myself to hang on because the God who had answered earlier prayers (as evidenced by previous journal entries), would somehow also furnish answers to these current matters even though I could not see how.   On more than one occasion I whispered the same words that the father of the possessed son said to Jesus in Mark 9:24:  “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.”  Ever eager to help His children, He also helped me.  It was with great joy to read the evidence of His faithfulness recorded in black and white by my own hand on the pages of my journal.  I fell in love with Him even more.

While we are in the midst of trying times, it’s easy to question where God is or if He has forgotten us because, instead of seeing His hand directly at work in a situation, we see only the blaring, crushing details of our oppressive circumstances.

In ages past, God knew that the Israelites of the Old Testament would behave similarly.  He had performed great feats for them, yet each time they would enter into a new seemingly impossible
situation, they would forget that what He had done before, He could do again.  As a result, He frequently admonished them to ‘forget not’ or to ‘remember.’

Deuteronomy 4:9
“Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live.  Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”

He knew that they would need to intentionally remember what He had done for them in the past so that they could be confident that He would take care of them from generation to generation.  But He didn’t want them to stop with only remembering for themselves; He also wanted them to tell their children and grandchildren of the wonderful provision He had made for them in every contingency.  As a result of their repeated telling to others, they would also be reminded of God’s faithfulness to them which would, in turn, also be an encouragement in their present circumstances.

Today we have God’s Word (the Bible) available to us as a written reminder of the things He has done, and the things He longs to do for His children.  While the Holy Bible is the divinely inspired Word of God, I like to think of it also as God’s journal to us where we can read of the struggles,
failures and triumphs of others as well as the abiding faithfulness of God in any and every situation that mankind could find himself in the midst of.  It is also filled with the many promises
He will fulfill in our life if we let Him.

Psalm 103:2-5
“Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

While it is not good to dwell on the past, it is beneficial to see the route you have travelled and the many obstacles you have encountered (and hopefully overcome) along the way.  If you look
closely, you will be able to see evidence of the presence of God’s hand at every turn.

Romans 8:28
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

For those times when you cannot see His hand, trust His heart.   He will never fail to keep His promises.  The choice is yours.  He’s waiting for you.

Fringe People

Societal norms.  Ever hear the term?  According to Dictionary.com, it means “an established standard of behavior shared by members of a social group to which each member is expected to conform.”
These established standards are based generally upon the majority of the  population of a defined area.   This defined area can be as small as one household – isn’t a family unit a social group where one is expected to conform to rules of behavior? – or can include a much larger area such as a city, state or country.

Our behavior in society is governed by laws – both God-given and man-made – and to break one of these will usually involve dealings with law enforcement and the judicial system.  Yet there are other behaviors that we have learned through the examples shown us while we were growing up that are viewed as acceptable (or
non-acceptable) within that particular society.  The breaking of these rules of behavior may not mean a stint inside the penal system, yet to do so could result in
rejection by those we interact with within that particular group.

Rules of behavior aside, there are those who operate on the fringes of societal norm for other reasons.   I call these ‘fringe people.’   These are the ones who do not fit into the ‘proper’ statistic categories as do the average number of most of the people within our society at any given time.  Some live on the fringe by choice, but many more are there due to circumstances beyond their control.    Everything from illness, the death of a loved one, pregnancy / miscarriage, separation / divorce, to physical
challenges and job loss can cause a person to live on the fringe of their usual
circle of daily society.

Why?   Because they are different now than others in their group, and dealing with those who have had unexpected circumstances come into their life causes us to take extra time and expend greater effort in interacting with those affected.  Too, it’s because we honestly cannot relate to someone in a specific situation if we haven’t been there ourselves.  We shy away from thinking about it because it could be too painful to imagine ourselves in their shoes; because we simply don’t know what to say or do to truly help the one hurting; or because we have been there and refuse to feel that pain and frustration of our past again.

There have always been ‘fringe people’ on this earth – the undesirables, the sick, the lepers, prostitutes, and tax collectors – yet these are the very same ones that Jesus purposefully interacted with time and again as He walked this earth.   When chastised for it by the religious leaders – those elite in society –  He answered them,

“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”  Luke 5:31

The sick Jesus spoke of here were not only sick in body, but also sick at heart, sick in their circumstances, and sick to death (literally) in their spiritual state.  They had been ostracized by the societal norm, ridiculed and ignored, yet He sought them out and met them where they existed along the edges of society.  As a result, they were
never the same again.

John 10:10
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Jesus came so that we could all have life.  He doesn’t want us living on the fringes while in our sick and hurting state, nor does He want us to die in a lost spiritual condition.  He wants us to have life to the full!

Dear Soul, He has not forgotten you.  You are so precious to Him and He understands more fully than anyone else can where the circumstances of life have brought you.  He doesn’t want you to feel alone and longs for you to invite Him into your life so that He can shoulder the burdens you carry.  He’s waiting for you.

Knit with Love

Knit, knit, purl, purl.  The knitting pattern for the baby blanket was repeated for row after row.  My fingers could practically work this pattern on their own, and left my thoughts free to think on the excitement the announcement about this expected new life generated.  With each stitch, I whispered a prayer for the mother and for this little life; for a safe pregnancy and delivery of a healthy baby. And, most of all that this little life will desire to live a life for our Creator.

Right at this moment, God is forming this little one’s body, as well as its mind, personality, likes, talents, and dislikes.  Dreams are also being instilled within its heart; dreams to pursue; dreams to find fulfillment and a purpose throughout its lifetime on this earth.

While we all look similar when we are born, we are each unique and oh-so-very precious to God. There are no carbon copies of human beings.  We are not like car parts on an assembly line where each particular piece has to be constructed exactly alike over and over again.  God has a specific pattern that He follows in the formation of each one of us.

As humans, we understand this formation of life on a rudimentary level while God sees the construction of life in all of its intricacies.  There are no mistakes.  There are no accidents.  God is intentional in the creation of each new life.

Psalm 139:13 “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Before we were formed, He knew us.  He designed us and throughout life, He never forgets us.

Isaiah 49: 15-16 “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has
borne?  Though she may forget, I will not forget you!  See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;….”

Psalm 139:17 “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!  How vast is the sum of them!”

You, dear soul, were knit together with love by our loving Heavenly Father.  You are not a mistake and He has never forgotten you.  Won’t you remember Him today?  He’s waiting for you.
